Bhima-Koregaon battle of 1818

  • The battle was fought between the British East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha Confederacy, at Koregaon Bhima,  a small village in Pune district of Maharashtra.
  • A few hundred Mahar soldiers of the East India Company, led by the British, defeated the massive Peshwa army, led by Peshwa Bajirao II.
  • The Dalits who follow BR Ambedkar view this battle as a victory of Mahars over the injustice and torture meted out to them by the Brahminical Peshwas.
Department of Military Affairs (DMA)
  • Created in the Defence Ministry and General Bipin Rawat who is the new Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) will head it.
  • The DMA will be the fifth department in the Ministry after the Department of Defence, the Department of Defence Production, the Department of Defence Research and Development and the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare.
  • The DMA’s mandate includes promoting jointness in procurement, training and staffing for the Services; facilitating restructuring of the military commands for optimal utilisation of resources by bringing about a jointness in operations, including through the establishment of joint/theatre commands and promoting use of indigenous equipment.

  •  Recently, the 80th session of the Indian History Congress (IHC) was held at Kannur, Kerala.
  • Founded in 1935, the Indian History Congress(IHC) is the largest association of professional historians in South Asia.
  • It called upon political and administrative authorities to pursue the constitutional duty of promoting composite culture, which is vital to promoting the territorial unity of India.
  • The Bharata Itihasa Samshodhaka Mandala (BISM-founded by Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade in 1910)organised an All India Congress in 1935 to celebrate its silver jubilee in Pune. As an outcome, the Indian History Congress (IHC) was born with about 50 delegates.
Merchant Discount Rate(MDR)
  • From January onwards, all companies with a turnover of Rs 50 crore or more need to provide the facility of payment through RuPay Debit card and UPI QR code to their customers, under which no MDR fee will be charged from customers as well as merchants
  • It is a fee charged from a merchant by a bank for accepting payments from customers through credit and debit cards in their establishments.
  • MDR charges are usually shared in pre-agreed proportion between the bank and a merchant and is expressed in percentage of transaction amount.
